If you want to access certain online government services, like getting an official copy of your tax filing from the IRS or receiving many veteran's services, they require you to register with a third party private company ID.me. So the digital ID system is already implemented and being administered. I'm sure it will be required to use it for more and more government services.

Not long after they were passing those REAL ID bills, I was in Iraq, where there was a major effort to enroll every Iraqi into a "biometric ID system" using handheld electronic devices that would record biometric data.

I have found it useful to reflect on how military technologies and concepts deployed abroad are reimported in barely (or sometimes not at all) disguised forms such as fusion centers. Every war we allow our government to pursue, they will use to hone technologies that can better implement oppression at home. What may come back here from the war in Ukraine or from the use of AI target systems in Gaza should be greatly disturbing to any thinking person.

The biometric ID system was implemented to better suppress various forms of Iraqi resistance to US occupation. We should think carefully about why it would be so desirable to politicians to have such a system domestically in a 'free' country.
